I have always been a keen walker and lover of landscapes and the wonderful effects of light. Accordingly, having admired the work of many landscape artists over a number of years, I was once attending an exhibition and remarked, in the hearing of a retired art teacher, that “I couldn’t do anything like that”. The lady immediately turned around and said that I probably could, if I tried!
Having thought about this challenge for some time, taking early retirement gave me an opportunity to try my hand at painting and other craftwork.
I’m still inspired by landscape and light but also, being a retired engineer, I’m particularly drawn to machinery and buildings in the context of landscape and the natural environment and have found many subjects of interest whilst living here on the edge of the fens with its big skies, open waters and remnants of past farming activities. At the present time I’m working mainly with watercolour but have also experimented with pastel, watercolour pencil, gouache and acrylics.
